Decans & the Minor Arcana
Information about the Decans, the 2 main classification systems, the relationship to the Minor Arcana, and links to so many resources!
Decan: (Dec=10) divides the 30º of each zodiac sign in set of 3, with a different planetary rulership for each set. Decans are also referred to Faces…these are the 36 Faces
The Egyptian term for “decan” has been translated to mean “the living,” as the decans rose (i.e. were born), lived, and then set (i.e. died) and was based on the Earth’s diurnal motion (sunrise to sunset to midnight to sunrise) and the stars that rose over the horizon each hour (also known as the Helical Rise)
We see significance of the Decans as early as 22nd century BCE & in many of the Pharaohs tombs between 9th-12th dynasty. One Example is Senenmut’s tomb*
Decans have a have been described visually in sophisticated images and symbolism primarily connected to gods, goddesses, daimons or spirits.
“A fascinating element of ancient Egyptian astronomy that was gradually adopted into Greco-‐‑Roman astrological practice is the decan. The decans were thirty-‐‑six individual stars or small constellations that rose and set at different times of the year, acting as a means of telling time throughout the night for the ancient Egyptians. They were eventually incorporated into the Babylonian zodiac by Hellenistic scholars, astrologers, and priests in Alexandria and beyond. Three decans were assigned to each of the twelve zodiacal signs. Because of their incorporation into an astrological system, they were seen as relevant astrological elements alongside the planets, the constellations, and the zodiac. As hour-‐‑markers, the star or constellation that made up each decan was seen as a lesser protective god, akin to a daimon. Eventually, their protector-‐‑ god role became medical in nature. In the Hermetic tradition that flourished in Alexandria, the decans were each assigned to the different parts of the body and were believed to have a say in the healing or decline of each of their given parts…”

There are 2 main classifications of the Decans.
The ancient classification is known as the Ptolemaic Order/Chaldean Order,
and the modern classification is done by Triplicity.
Decanic Rulership: Descending Ptolemaic Order/Chaldean Order (DCO)
Based on the Speed of the traditional Planets from Slowest to Fastest: Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon (these are also the order of the Planetary Hours: more info on that here: planetaryhours.net) this was created by:
Claudius Ptolemy (100-170AD Alexandria, Egypt)
was a mathematician, astronomer, astrologer, geographer, and music theorist, who wrote about a dozen scientific treatises. He came up with Ptolemaic Order, also known as Geocentric System, that places the Earth at the Center, with the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and then Fixed Stars

Classification of Decans by Triplicity
Triplicity is the set of 3 signs per element.
Fire: Aries: (Mars), Leo: (Sun), Sagittarius: (Jupiter)
Earth: Taurus: (Venus), Virgo: (Mercury), Capricorn: (Saturn)
Air: Gemini :(Mercury), Libra: (Venus), Aquarius: (Saturn)
Water: Cancer (Moon), Scorpio: (Mars), Pisces: (Jupiter)
The traditional ruler of each element is found in sequence of each element,
starting with the planet that rules that sign.

Tarot (extremely brief history)
Tarot is a system of divination using specific set of cards with distinct imagery and numerical, and astrological information. The oldest known tarot decks are from the 14th Century, in Italy.
Tarot is based on a long history of Cartomancy a tradition practiced by the Romani people, a nomadic Diaspora from migrated from India, Romania, Hungary Czech Republic and beyond. The Romani peoples have experienced harm, discrimination, neglect and laws taking their cultures away. They continue to experience racial slurs, and discrimination. Tarot has become incredible accessible in the recent past, but it is important to acknowledge the foundations and lineage.

Tarot Card Association with the Minor Arcana
“In the early 20th century, members of the British secret society of the Golden Dawn created what would become the world's best-known tarot deck: the Rider Waite Smith tarot. They also created an infrastructure of esoteric correspondences around the deck, assigning each minor card numbered 2 through 10 in each of the four suits, to a decan—a 10° section of the zodiac, and by extension a 10-day section of the calendar year. For magical practitioners, these decans have a deep and lasting relevance; their mythic history, their imagery, and their use in talismanic work date back millennia. In our time, the yearlong "decan walk" has become a means of honoring that occult legacy, a way of experiencing firsthand the qualities reflected in each of these cosmic windows. “

Ways to Work with the Deans
Lay out natal chart with Tarot cards of the corresponding degrees/decans. In addition to planets and angles, Include your Part of Spirit. According to Austin Coppick, The Decan associated with your Low of Spirit describes the core meaning of you life. Because the decans focus on 10º of the chart, you will get a much more detailed interpretation of the signs. As you go along, you will see Aries 1 has different feel than Aries 2 & 3…and so on, for each sign.
Looking at the planets in each decal will give you a deeper meaning of the energy of that planet. For instance, if you have Mars in Aries 1, you have 3x the strength of Aries: it is the ruler in domicile, in a Mars ruled decan. This is going to be slightly different than Mars in Aries 3, which only has 2x the strength of Mars…and so on for each planet.
**It is important to note the decans go up to 9º59/19º59, so 10º&20º start new decan. **
Essential Dignities:
Planets are categorized by dignity: Domicile, Exaltation, Detriment, Fall, and peregrine/lacks dignity
If you have a planet in Fall such as Venus in Virgo is in Fall, if you have Venus in a Venus ruled decan of Virgo (Virgo 2 in DCO/ Virgo 3 in Triplicity) Venus has more autonomy. If you have a planet in detriment such as Jupiter in Gemini, if they are found in Gemini 1 (DCO) they have more strength.

Elusive Mercury
time sensitive Celestial event!!
Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun, only getting as far away at 28°, often getting absorbed by the Sun’s light. Mercury is currently a morning star, rising shortly before Sunrise alongside Venus, who has been a morning star since December 2021, joining Mars, Jupiter and Saturn!
And on June 26th and 27th the Balsamic Moon will join the party, making all of our Solar System that is visible to the naked eye, visible and together!!!
This is a rare celestial event, and I hope you each wake an hour before the Sun to marvel at the awe of this moment!!
What is the Balsamic Moon?
Balsamic Moon conjunct Venus, Mars and Saturn at 6:48am March 28, 2022. Venus is the 3rd brightest being in the sky, and they are near their greatest elongation, so even brighter. Mars and Saturn are less visible. They are all morning stars right now, rising before the Sun.
In this blog post I will be sharing about the Balsamic Moon through transits, progressions and natal Balsamic Moon.
The Balsamic Moon is the dark phase of the Moon also known as the Waning Crescent. Named after the word ‘balsam’ which is an aromatic resinous substance, a type of flower as well as a type of fir tree. I am not sure why the Balsamic Moon was named after balsam, I have read some accounts which say that balsam is really soothing, restorative and healing, which are some of the associations of the Balsamic Moon phase. I have read another account saying, because the Balsamic Moon is the dark phase of the Moon, it is associated with the deep, dark color associated with the Balsam Fir. Perhaps there are other reasons.
The Balsamic Moon is the final phase in the lunation cycle. They are in order as follows: New Moon, Waxing Crescent, First Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, Full Moon, Disseminating, Last Quarter, Balsamic Moon phase, dissolving back into New Moon to start the cycle again. The Balsamic Moon Phase is 45º to 0º being the Sun, and rises shortly before Sunrise, until the Sun’s light absorbs the light of the Moon.
The sensation of the Moon disappearing comes from the proximity of the Moon to the Sun. The Moon rises and sets at different times everyday. In the waxing phase, the Moon is getting farther from the Sun, until the Moon is opposite the Sun, in an opposition’s called the Full Moon. In the waning phases, the Moon is getting closer to the Sun, arcing the sky closer and closer until on the last day of the Balsamic phase, and the first day of the Waxing Crescent, the Moon is rising with the Sun which is why it looks like we don’t have a Moon in the sky. (And why we don’t have the Moon in the night sky: because ki is rising at Sunrise)
“How long does it take our Moon to go around Earth?
It takes 27 days, 7 hours, and 43 minutes for our Moon to complete one full orbit around Earth. This is called the sidereal month, and is measured by our Moon's position relative to distant “fixed” stars. However, it takes our Moon about 29.5 days to complete one cycle of phases (from new Moon to new Moon). This is called the synodic month. The difference between the sidereal and synodic months occurs because as our Moon moves around Earth, the Earth also moves around our Sun. Our Moon must travel a little farther in its path to make up for the added distance and complete the phase cycle.”
Sky Tellers: Moon Phases
Within these 29.5 days, each phase of the lunation cycle is about 3.5 days. The Moon is the fastest moving object in our Solar System, traveling at approximately 13º a day. Each phase lasts 45º 3.5x13=45.5. ….45ºx8 phases of the Moon =360º of our Zodiac. Each sign in the zodiac (within in whole sign houses) is 30º, So each phase of the Moon will span between 2 to 3 signs.
ENERGETICALLY, WHAT SHALL I DO UNDER A TRANSITING BALSAMIC MOON PHASE?
The Balsamic Moon phase is ideal for resting. It is a time to go inward, and reflect, clear, and cleanse. It is a lovely time to grieve, clean your space. If the Balsamic Moon is in the Fire element, it is great to have a fire, and burn intentions you want to release, or old notes, mail, etc. Let it go! If the Balsamic Moon is in the Earth element, it is great to clean your space, and let go of objects that no longer serve you. It can also be a great time to lay on the earth, and just be held by their ancient healing wisdoms. If the Balsamic Moon is in the Air element it is a great time to do some breathing exercises, and try and release some stagnate breath. If the Balsamic Moon is in the Water element, it is great to take a long bath, or shower and exfoliate. It is also a lovely time to go to a body of water such as the Ocean of river, and have a water honoring ritual. You of course can do any of the above under any element, but if you wish to specially work with the element, these are a few suggestions. Either way, if you are able, rest, restore and replenish.
The Moon is constantly moving, and therefore people of the same Sun sign can be born under 8 different phases of the Moon, 12 different signs of the Moon, 12 different houses of the Moon and varying aspects including Void of Course Moon. example, someone who is an Aries sun, could be an Aries Moon (Koch would mean they were born under the Balsamic of New Moon phase) a Taurus, Gemini, Cancer etc. And if they were born with a Libra Moon, they would born under the Full Moon (technically, they could also be born under the Waxing Gibbous Moon, if the Moon wasn’t fully oppose the Sun). So people of the same Sun sign can have vastly different charts, and therefore vastly different personalities and strengths!
SO what does it mean to be BORN UNDER A BALSAMIC MOON?
The Balsamic Moon phase does not reflects very little to no light, because the Moon is traveling with the Sun (and being absorbed by the Sun’s rays). Folks who are born under this phase of the Moon tend to have heightened internal compasses. They may be psychic, intuitive, mediums, sensitive to sensations, and deeply creative. Because we can’t see the physical body of the Moon during this phase, folks born under this phase of the Moon may feel dissociative, or out of body. It may be difficult to ground. But because the Balsamic Moon can fall into any sign, house or aspects to the Moon, the combinations of the expression of the natal Moon, will be specific to the Native. (each indivdual)
If you would like to know more about the Balsamic Moon, I highly recommend 2 of Demetra Georges Books, ‘Mysteries of the Dark Moon : used book resource & ‘Finding Our Way Through the Dark used book resource You Can learn more about her here: Demetra George's website

THE PROGRESSED BALSAMIC MOON
We are each born under the our specific phase of the Moon, but each one of us (as long as we live to be 29) will experience each of the progressed phases and signs of the Moon. Transiting Moon takes 29 days to go around the Zodiac, and the Progressed Moon takes a little over 29 years to go around the Zodiac, spending approxiamately 2.5 years in each sign (2.5 x12= 30) and a little over 3.5 years in each phase (3.5 x8phases= 28)
The progressed Balsamic Moon will happen at different times in our lives depending on what phase of the Moon you were born under. Someone who was born under a Full Moon will go through their first Progressed Balsamic Moon Phase in their mid teens, and someone who was born under a New Moon will experience their first Progressed Balsamic Moon Phase in their late 20s/early 30s. (we can experience up to 3 of each of the Progressed phases within a 100 year lifespan)
Just like the transiting Balsamic Moon phase in one of reflection, contemplation and isolation, the Progressed Balsamic Moon Phase can be a 3.5 year + period in which our energies ask us to go inward. For many people it is a time of endings. This could be a death of a loved one, an end of a relationship, a life changing move, or the completion of a chapter in your life such as school, or a career. It is a time to slow down, rest, grieve, release and heal.
Many of my clients have said this time period has been one of tenderness, as they are letting go of parts of themselves that was once familiar, sacred or important. The Progressed Dark Moon Phase span the Progressed Balsamic Moon and the Progressed New Moon, bot of which are about 3.5 years of your life. So the Progressed dark Moon phase can be upwards to 7 years! Many of my clients, (as well as myself) noticed a milestone and major shift in energy from the Progressed Balsamic to the Progressed New Moon…however, it takes awhile for the new chapter to gain momentum. So part of the Progressed New Moon (in which the Moon is still dark) there can be a sense of nostalgia, longing, or sadness as you know you have to step firmly in a new direction.
The Progressed Balsamic Moon is a time of great healing, catharsis and rejuvenation, if you allow yourself the time to go inward.

Here’s an added bonus. In the Blue ridge Mountains, there is a Mountain called Black Balsam due to all of the Balsam Firs. Here I am atop Black Balsam in the Spring of 2021. I have yet to watch the Balsamic Moon rise before Sunrise from Black Balsam, but hopefully one day soon!
Venus Greatest Elongation
slide made by me, indigomoonartist about Venus
March 20, 2022 marks Venus’s greatest western elongation, 47° away from the Sun. Venus has been rising as a morning star since January 19, 2022. At that point, Venus was low on the horizon, rising shortly before Sunrise.
Venus was moving slowly through post retroShade til mid February, at about 1/2 a degree a day. Once Venus was out of their post retroshade, they started moving at their typical speed of 1º a day, causing Venus and the Sun to separate, which. means Venus’s rise time was getting earlier and earlier.
“After it’s direct station, the planet gradually picks up speed, moving towards its greatest elongation ahead of the Sun as a morning star appearing in the Eastern sky. During its greatest elongation , it travels an average rate of speed. The planet then begins its descent as a morning star in the east, gradually increasing speed until it is 15º from the Sun, where it makes its morning set, disappearing from view” Demetra George from ‘Ancient Astrology In Theory and Practice: A manual of Traditional Techniques Volume 1’
You can see the speed of Venus ( and all of the planets in the Solar System) by looking at an ephermis. Here is an online version for 2022. 2022 ephemeris
Today, March 20, 2022, Venus conjunct Mars both rose about 5:20 am, followed by Saturn around 5:55 and then Sunrise at 7:33am. (based on the latitude and longitude of where I live. You can learn about the planet’s daily rise and set times for your town on Time and Date. com : time and date.com

This video by Eylene Pirez, who is an AstroPhyicist, explains what western and eastern elongation of Inferior planets ( Venus and Mercury) mean. Venus and Mercury are on the interior to the Sun, from our orbit Earth, that is why they are called inferior planets.
I have 2 videos on my YouTube channels of today’s sunrise. One is a regular video, in which you can see the brightness of Venus, and the distance to the horizon. In this video, you will hear the sunrise chorus of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Video of Venus as Morning Star
The second video is a time-lapse taken between 6:50-7:40 am. If you scroll in the top of the tree line of the middle tree, you will see Venus, and you can watch them move westward as the Sun comes up. This video shows the movement of the Solar System. You can see both the Sun and Venus move (Mars and Saturn are also there, but are not visible due to tree line) You can watch the light of Venus get absorbed by the Sun’s light. time lapse of Venus as Great elongation
What do we know about a morning star Venus?
“Venus is strong and effective as a morning star, although she does not rejoice because she is of the nocturne sect and ahead of the Sun. … The Morning star destination for Mercury and Venus is limited to the duration from their helical morning rise to their morning set. During this time, they are visible, direct in motion, and gaining speed and thus generally effective in bring about their significations, strongest around their greatest elongation” Demetra George from ‘Ancient Astrology In Theory and Practice: A manual of Traditional Techniques Volume 1’
In summation, Venus is effective because they are fast and direct, but not as happy as they would be if they were an evening star. (Venus is the night/nocttunal sect benefic)
What do we know about this moment in time (March 20, 2022)
Venus is conjunct Mars. Mars rules Aries, so part of the strength on their conjunction may be helpful. though technically, because Venus moves faster than Mars, Venus is ‘separating from Mars’ which means, they are in relationship through a tight conjunction, but Venus is zipping past, and may not hear Mars. Today, is the Vernal Equinox, also known as the first day of Spring, or the first day of Aries Season.
Venus’s greatest elongation is happening at Tropical Aquarius 13º. Venus is peregrine which means Venus does not have essential dignity in Aquarius. The term peregrine means wanderer.
Venus will soon be in their sign of exaltation: Pisces (April 5- May 2, 2022)

2022 Astrological Transits
Learning Astrology is leaning cycles, and patterns, and timing.
Learning Astrology is leaning cycles, and patterns, and timing. It is a deeply intuitive and symbolic language that is based on the movement of the Cosmos.
Just like each year you, and I will have a birthday, which is called a Solar returns: or the moment the Sun returns to the same degree it was when you were born, each planet has a cyclical movement.
Each planet moves a different pace (that will be for another blog post) but those paces repeat themselves. An example, the Sun will always goes from Aries to Taurus to Gemini etc in the same amount of time. The Moon will travel through all 12 zodiac signs in 29 days. Mercury will zip quickly around the Sun, and will look as though ki is traveling backwards, aka Mercury Retrograde.
Each planet has their own cycle… its the interactions that change day by day, month by month, year by year. Yes Mercury will be retrograde three times a year, but the signs and aspects change.
This is true for all the planets, and together, all the aspects happening in the sky at once, creates a new expression of the same 10 planets: the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.
Leaning Astrology is easier when you have a guide to help walk you through the movement of the astrological transits. Since 2017, I have created a transit zine that gives information of the transits, aspects, and ingresses of our Solar System.
In addition to a calendar with all of the 2022 transit information, I also hand drew each of the mundane charts for each New Moon and Full Moon of 2022.
Where you can purchase my 2022 Astrological Zine
You can purchase this zine from many amazing spaces. I created it through Blurb, which is an awesome resource for people to create zines, books and and photo books. The link to order it is here: https://www.blurb.com/books/10919903-2022-astrological-zine
